How Net Run Rate (NRR) is calculated
Under the ICC Standard Playing Conditions, Net Run Rate (NRR) is calculated by taking the average runs per over scored by a team across a tournament, and subtracting the average runs per over scored against them.
The bowled-out rule (the part people get wrong)
Under the ICC Standard Playing Conditions, if a team is bowled out (loses all 10 wickets), it is treated for NRR as having batted its full allotted overs, regardless of when the last wicket fell. This is the single most common NRR mistake.
For example, if Team A scores 120 all out in 15.2 overs of a 20-over match, its scoring rate for NRR is
120 / 20.0 = 6.00, NOT 120 / 15.333 = 7.82. The same rule applies to overs
bowled: enter the full allotment when the opposition is dismissed early.
Accuracy notes and tournament exclusions
- Abandoned / No Result Matches: Matches washed out without a result are completely excluded from both teams’ cumulative runs and overs tallies.
- Duckworth–Lewis–Stern (DLS): In rain-affected matches where overs are reduced, the revised target and revised overs quota are used. DLS par calculations themselves are proprietary and are not computed on this site.
Worked example: 3-match tournament pool
- Match 1: Scored 180/4 in 20.0 overs • Conceded 150/8 in 20.0 overs
- Match 2: Scored 200/5 in 20.0 overs • Conceded 160 all out in 18.2 overs (counts as 20.0 overs)
- Match 3: Scored 160/6 in 20.0 overs • Conceded 170/3 in 20.0 overs (opposition batted first)

540 runs / 60.0 overs = 9.000 rpo - Cumulative Conceded:
480 runs / 60.0 overs = 8.000 rpo - Net Run Rate:
9.000 − 8.000 = +1.000 NRR
Note match 2: the opposition was bowled out in 18.2 overs but is scored across the full 20.0, which drops their effective run rate and lifts Team A's NRR. Swap that match to the actual 18.2 overs and the NRR would read higher than it should — the mistake that has decided real qualification races.

Why does 19.3 overs equal 19.50 in decimal?
A cricket over is 6 balls, so 3 balls is 3/6 = 0.5 of an over. The notation 19.3 means 19
completed overs and 3 balls, which converts to exactly 19.50 decimal overs for the
arithmetic.
How does being bowled out affect net run rate?
A bowled-out side is treated as having used its full allotted overs, not the fewer it faced. 120 all out in 15.2 of a 20-over match counts as 120 off 20.0 (6.00 rpo), not off 15.33 (7.82).
Can net run rate be negative?
Yes — if a team concedes more per over than it scores across the tournament. Because NRR is a league tie-breaker, a negative figure can still qualify a side if its win count is high enough.
How much does one match change a team's tournament NRR?
The more overs already banked, the harder NRR is to move. Early in a group, one lopsided result swings it sharply; by the final round each side's cumulative overs are large, so even a big win shifts NRR by only a few hundredths.
