What is net run rate in cricket?
Net run rate (NRR) is the tie-breaker that separates teams level on points in a limited-overs league table. It is the rate at which a team scores across a tournament minus the rate at which it concedes — but two rules, the bowled-out full-overs rule and the exclusion of no-results, trip up most hand calculations. What NRR is for
In a limited-overs league — a One Day International (ODI) group stage or a Twenty20 International (T20I) tournament — several teams often finish level on points. Net run rate is the most common tie-breaker used to rank them. A higher NRR is better: it rewards teams that score quickly and concede slowly across all their matches, aggregated over the whole tournament rather than match by match.
Converting overs to decimals
Overs in cricket are written as overs.balls, where each over is six balls. Before any run rate arithmetic you must convert to a true decimal, because the ".3" in 45.3 means three balls, not three tenths of an over:
So 45.3 overs (45 overs and 3 balls) is 45 + 3/6 = 45.5 in decimal, not 45.3.
Getting this conversion wrong is the single most common NRR mistake.
The run rate and net run rate formulas
A single innings run rate is runs divided by overs faced, in decimal:
Net run rate aggregates a team’s whole tournament — runs and overs on both sides:
Note that NRR is computed on the tournament totals, not by averaging per-match run rates. You sum all runs scored and all overs faced across every counted match, and likewise for runs conceded and overs bowled.
The two rules that catch people out

The first rule applies symmetrically: if you bowl the opposition out, their innings is treated as the full allotted overs when it counts against your "runs conceded / overs bowled" side. The second rule keeps rain-ruined fixtures from distorting the table.
Worked example
Take a single ODI to see the arithmetic. A team scores 280 in 50 overs and concedes 240 in 48.2 overs (the opposition was bowled out having faced 48 overs and 2 balls; here they were dismissed, so we use the overs actually bowled, 48.2 = 48 + 2/6 = 48.333).
- Own run rate:
280 / 50 = 5.60. - Opposition run rate:
240 / 48.333 = 4.966. - Net run rate:
5.60 − 4.966 = +0.634.
A positive NRR of +0.634 means this team scored, on average, about 0.63 runs per over more than it conceded in this match. Across a tournament you would repeat the totals over all counted matches before subtracting.
What NRR does not do
This site does not calculate DLS (Duckworth–Lewis–Stern) par scores, which are governed by a proprietary method and are separate from NRR — NRR is a standings tie-breaker, while DLS resets targets in interrupted matches. NRR also does not weight the importance of a match, does not account for wickets in hand, and treats a one-run and a hundred-run margin only through their effect on run totals. Use it as the ranking rule it is, not as a measure of how well a team played.
Frequently asked questions
If a team is bowled out early, which overs count?
The full allotted overs. A side dismissed for its score in 42.1 of a 50-over match has that score divided by 50, not by 42.1(6). This is the most important rule to get right.
Do abandoned matches affect NRR?
No. No-result and abandoned matches are excluded entirely — none of their runs or overs enter either the "scored" or "conceded" totals.
Is net run rate the same as DLS?
No. NRR is a league-table tie-breaker computed from tournament run totals. DLS is a separate, proprietary method for resetting targets in rain-affected matches, and we do not compute it. See how required run rate is calculated for the related chase arithmetic.
