How World Aquatics points are based
A World Aquatics points score compresses a swim time into a single number so that performances across different events, strokes and distances sit on one comparable scale. The whole system rests on one cube-law formula and a published set of base times — here is what those base times are, how the points are worked out, and why the table year always has to be attached.

What the points system is for
World Aquatics (the international federation formerly known as FINA) publishes a points table so that swims in different events, strokes and distances can be compared on one scale. A 50 m freestyle and a 200 m breaststroke are completely different efforts, but once each is turned into points they can be ranked side by side. Meet organisers use it to seed and award multi-event competitions, and coaches use it to track a swimmer’s progress across events. The score is a scoring convention — a normalised measure of how fast a swim was relative to a benchmark — not a record of races won.
How World Aquatics points are based
The whole table is built on one cube-law relationship between a swimmer’s time and a published base time:
- base time
- the published reference time for that event, course, sex and age from the World Aquatics points table — the swim worth exactly 1000 points
- swim time
- the swimmer’s time in the same event and course, in seconds
The ratio of base time to swim time is raised to the third power, multiplied by 1000, and then truncated to a whole number — the fractional part is dropped, not rounded. A swim faster than the base time produces a ratio above 1, so it scores above 1000; a slower swim scores below.
What the base time is
The base time is the reference time for a specific event, course and sex, published by World Aquatics, that is defined to be worth exactly 1000 points. It is the denominator in the formula, so it anchors the whole scale: every other time is scored as a ratio against it. Base times are set from elite performance data and are re-based periodically as the sport gets faster, which is why a points score is only meaningful against a stated table year (the edition of the table in force, per §4.0 of the points methodology). The same swim time will earn slightly different points under a 2022 table and a 2025 table.
The full base-time table runs to hundreds of rows — every event, at every distance, for LCM, SCM and SCY, by sex and age category. We do not reproduce it here; instead the structure is best understood from a single illustrative row, with the official table linked for the rest.

That row is a worked illustration only, not an official base time — always take the real base time from the current World Aquatics table for the event and course you are scoring.
Worked example
Suppose the base time for an event and course, in the table year in force, is 100.00 s, and a swimmer records 110.00 s in the same event and course.
- Form the ratio:
base time / swim time = 100.00 / 110.00 = 0.90909… - Cube it:
0.90909³ = 0.751315… - Multiply by 1000:
1000 × 0.751315 = 751.3…, i.e.1000 × 0.751 ≈ 751. - Truncate to a whole number: 751 points.
A swim equal to the base time (100.00 s exactly) would score 1000 points; being 10 seconds slower here costs about 249 points.
The cube relationship
Because the ratio is cubed, points do not fall away in a straight line as the swim slows down. Near the base time, a small time gain moves the score sharply; the same absolute time saving is worth far more points at the fast end of the scale than at the slow end. That is deliberate: it rewards improvements close to the reference standard, where they are hardest to earn, and it is why elite swimmers can post scores well above 1000 while a modest time improvement lower down the scale nudges the points only a little.
What a points score does not tell you
1000 points is the reference standard for the table year, not a world record — elite swims routinely exceed it. Scores from different courses are not directly comparable: LCM, SCM and SCY each have their own base times, so a swim must be scored against the table for the course it was swum in. And because the relationship is a cube, small time gaps move points sharply at the fast end, so always put the table year in view alongside the underlying time.
