How overs convert to decimals

A cricket score of “45.3 overs” looks like a decimal, but it is not one. The digit after the dot counts balls, not tenths — and because there are six balls to an over, 45.3 overs is actually 45.5 in maths. Get that conversion wrong and every run rate and net run rate you calculate is off. Here is the rule, the conversion table and the worked examples.

Why “45.3 overs” is not 45.3 in maths

Cricket records overs in overs.balls notation. The number before the dot is the count of completed overs; the number after the dot is how many legal balls have been bowled in the over currently in progress. So 45.3 means 45 whole overs plus 3 balls.

The trap is that this looks exactly like a decimal number, and a plain calculator treats it as one. But three balls out of six is half an over, not three tenths. As a decimal the same amount of bowling is 45.5. The digit after the dot is always in the range 0 to 5 — there is no such thing as 45.6 overs, because a sixth legal ball completes the over and the score rolls over to 46.0.

The conversion formula

To turn an overs.balls figure into a true decimal number of overs, keep the completed overs and divide the ball count by six:

overs_decimal = completed_overs + (balls / 6)

Applying it to three common scores:

  1. 45.3 → 45 + 3/6 = 45 + 0.5 = 45.5
  2. 20.3 → 20 + 3/6 = 20 + 0.5 = 20.5
  3. 10.4 → 10 + 4/6 = 10 + 0.667 = 10.667

Notice that only the balls part changes; the whole-over count is carried straight across. The fraction balls / 6 is the piece that a calculator gets wrong if you type the score in directly.

Balls-to-decimal conversion table

Because the ball digit only ever runs from 0 to 5, the whole conversion fits in six rows. This is the fractional part you add to the completed-over count:

So 18.2 overs is 18.3333, 19.5 overs is 19.8333, and a completed innings of 50.0 overs is simply 50.

How do overs convert to decimals?

Read the score as two separate pieces, convert the second piece, then add. Take the whole-over count as it is, look up (or divide) the ball count against six, and sum the two. For 10.4: the 10 stays as 10, the 4 balls become 4 ÷ 6 = 0.667, and the total is 10.667 overs. The one thing to check every time is that the ball digit is a valid 0–5; a “.7” or “.9” is a data-entry error, not a real cricket score.

Why this matters for run rate and net run rate

A run rate is runs divided by overs — and that divisor has to be the decimal number of overs, not the overs.balls figure. If a team scored 300 in 45.3 overs, the run rate is 300 / 45.5 = 6.59, not 300 / 45.3 = 6.62. The error is small on one innings but it compounds: net run rate aggregates runs and overs across a whole tournament and then subtracts the rate conceded, so a mis-converted overs figure can flip the sign of a tie-break and change who qualifies. The common mistake

The single most frequent error is typing 45.3 straight into a phone or spreadsheet and dividing. The tool happily returns an answer, so nothing looks broken — but it has divided by 45.3 when it should have divided by 45.5. The bigger the ball fraction, the bigger the gap: 10.4 read as 10.4 instead of 10.667 overstates the rate by nearly 3%. It is a silent mistake precisely because both numbers are plausible.
