How World Aquatics swimming points are calculated
World Aquatics (formerly FINA) establishes a reference standard for each swimming event called a Base Time (defined as 1,000 points, calibrated against the latest Olympic or World Championship cycle).
Because points follow a cubic power-law relationship:
- A 1% improvement in time yields approximately a 3% increase in points.
- At the elite end (near 900+ points), tenths and hundredths of a second produce dramatic point shifts.
Accuracy notes and pool course standards
1,000 points in Long Course Metres (LCM) represents a distinct physical performance from 1,000 points in Short Course Metres (SCM) due to the frequency of turns and push-off velocity. Always compare points within the same course designation.
Worked example: Male 100m Freestyle LCM in 50.80s
- Published World Aquatics Base Time: 46.80 seconds
- Swimmer's Time: 50.80 seconds
- Calculate ratio:
46.80 / 50.80 = 0.92126 - Cube the ratio:
(0.92126)³ = 0.78189 - Multiply by 1000:
1000 × 0.78189 = 781.89 - Truncate to integer: 781 World Aquatics Points

Frequently asked questions
Does 1000 points mean a World Record?
Not necessarily. 1,000 points corresponds to the defined World Aquatics Base Time set prior to each championship cycle. If a swimmer breaks the world record during that cycle, they can score over 1,000 points (e.g. 1,025 points).
Are times truncated or rounded?
Under official World Aquatics rules, calculated points are truncated (or rounded down) to the integer.
