How the split and watts are related

On a Concept2 ergometer, power in watts is tied to your 500m split by a fixed cube relationship: halve your time per metre and you need eight times the power. The published relationship uses a constant of 2.80, where the split is expressed as seconds per 500m.

Because power scales with the cube of speed, small changes in split mean large changes in watts. Pace per 500m is the unit rowers actually train and race by, so this tool keeps the split front and centre and derives watts from it (or vice versa).

Worked example: a 2:00 split

  1. Convert the split to seconds per 500m: 2:00 = 120 s
  2. Seconds per metre: 120 / 500 = 0.24 s/m
  3. Watts: 2.80 / 0.24^3 = 2.80 / 0.013824 = 202.5 W
  4. Total time for 2000m: 120 × (2000 / 500) = 480 s = 8:00

So a steady 2:00 split is about 203 W and would complete a 2K in 8:00.

Accuracy notes and limits

This is the Concept2 ergometer model, not on-water physics

The 2.80 constant relates the Concept2 ergometer's measured flywheel work to a 500m split and is specific to Concept2's model. It is not a general on-water boat-speed physics equation. On the water, speed for a given power depends on hull shape, crew weight and number, rigging, water and wind conditions, and technique, so the same watts will produce a different split in a boat than on the erg. Use this to understand and pace erg workouts, not to predict on-water race times. This is an educational reference, not coaching advice.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a small split change move the watts so much?

Power scales with the cube of speed. Dropping from a 2:00 to a 1:50 split is only ten seconds, but it lifts the required power from about 203 W to 263 W — roughly 30% more.

Is the split the same as pace per 500m?

Yes. On rowing machines the “split” is the pace per 500m — the time it would take to row 500m at your current effort. That is why the reference table lists them as the same value.

Does this match my erg's watts display?

It uses Concept2's published relationship, so it should track a Concept2 monitor closely. Other brands may calibrate power differently, so treat those readings as approximate here.
