How WMA age grading works

Age grading utilizes mathematical factor tables compiled by World Masters Athletics (WMA). By comparing an athlete’s time against the statistical world record standard for that specific age and sex, it creates a level playing field.

Age-Adjusted Time = Actual Race Time × WMA Age Factor Age-Grade % = (Open World Standard / Age-Adjusted Time) × 100 Age Standard = Open World Standard / WMA Age Factor

Table Versions & Revisions

WMA periodically updates factor tables as masters world records improve. Different websites may use different table years (e.g. 2015, 2020, or current), which causes calculated percentages to vary by a few tenths of a percent. ScoreIndexer uses official WMA published factors.

Worked example: 55-year-old male 5K in 20:00

  1. Actual time: 20:00 (1,200 seconds)
  2. WMA 5K Factor for M55: 0.8650
  3. Age-Adjusted Time: 1,200 × 0.8650 = 1,038 seconds = 17 minutes 18 seconds (17:18)
  4. Open 5K World Standard: 780 seconds (13:00)
  5. Age-Grade Score: (780 / 1038) × 100 = 75.14%

Frequently asked questions

Can an Age-Grade Score exceed 100%?

Yes. If a master athlete breaks the benchmark world record for their single age, their score will exceed 100%.

Are 5K road factors the same as track 5000m factors?

WMA publishes separate factors for road races and track races to account for the tighter turns, synthetic bounce, and lack of road undulations on 400m tracks.
