What is a score differential in golf?
A score differential is the single-round building block of your Handicap Index. It takes one round’s gross score and normalises it for the difficulty of the tee you played and the conditions on the day, so that rounds on hard and easy courses can be compared fairly. What a score differential represents
When you post a round under the World Handicap System (WHS), governed jointly by the USGA and The R&A, that round is not stored as a raw score. It is first converted into a score differential: a number that answers the question “how well did this round play relative to a scratch golfer on this tee, once we account for how the course played that day?” Because it is normalised, a 90 on a brutally hard tee can produce a lower — better — differential than an 85 on an easy one. Your Handicap Index is then built from your best differentials, so getting this single-round figure right is the foundation of the whole system.
The WHS score differential formula
A score differential is calculated for every acceptable round using this formula:
The result is rounded to one decimal place. The (113 / Slope Rating)
term rescales the round onto a standard-difficulty course, and the bracket measures how many
strokes above (or below) the scratch expectation you actually shot, after adjusting for conditions.

- the Slope Rating of a course of standard difficulty — the reference point the formula scales to
- AGS
- Adjusted Gross Score: your gross score after the net double bogey cap is applied to any hole
- Course Rating
- the expected score of a scratch golfer, in strokes, for the specific tee played
- Slope Rating
- the relative difficulty of the tee for a bogey golfer, on a scale of 55–155
- PCC
- Playing Conditions Calculation: a daily adjustment of −1 to +3 set by your association (use 0 if none is given)

Worked example
Suppose you play a tee with a Slope Rating of 128 and a Course Rating of 71.2, shoot an adjusted gross score of 88, and no PCC has been supplied (so PCC = 0):

- Scale factor:
113 / 128 = 0.8828. - Strokes over the rating:
88 − 71.2 − 0 = 16.8. - Multiply:
0.8828 × 16.8 = 14.83. - Round to one decimal: Score Differential 14.8.

What a score differential does not tell you
One score differential describes one round, not your ability. It is not your Handicap Index, and it says nothing on its own about whether that round counts towards your Index — that depends on where it falls among your most recent 20. It also relies on a correct Adjusted Gross Score: if the net double bogey cap has not been applied to your worst holes, the differential will be too high. And the PCC in the formula is issued by your association, not estimated by you, so entering a guessed value will distort the result.
Frequently asked questions
Why is 113 in the formula?
113 is the Slope Rating of a course of standard difficulty. Dividing 113 by the tee’s Slope Rating rescales your round onto that standard course so differentials from different tees are comparable.
What do I use for PCC if I do not have one?
Use 0. The Playing Conditions Calculation is set by your golf association’s scoring system; if no value has been supplied for the day, the differential is calculated as though conditions were normal.
Is the score differential rounded?
Yes. The final score differential is rounded to one decimal place, as in the worked example where 14.83 becomes 14.8.
